The honors just keep coming for Philip Vuocolo, MD, MHA, FACS, a board-certified acute care and trauma surgeon and trauma program medical director at Penn Highlands DuBois. Dr. Vuocolo was recognized with a citation from Pennsylvania Senator Wayne Langerholc Jr. for “contributing to national security and protecting liberty and freedom by supporting employee participation in the United States National Guard and Reserve Force.”
In the citation, Senator Langerholc wrote, “The Senate of Pennsylvania takes great pleasure in recognizing those citizens who, through dedication and excellence, contribute in a meaningful way to the well-being of their communities and ultimately to all of the people in this great Commonwealth.”
Dr. Vuocolo served our country with honor and distinction as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy aboard the USNS Comfort during the Gulf War. He went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and U.S. Air National Guard as a squadron flight surgeon in the 174th Fighter Wing.
This honor follows an award the surgeon recently received from the U.S. Department of Defense. On January 21, 2025, Dr. Vuocolo received the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriotic Employer Award during a ceremony at Penn Highlands DuBois. The award recognizes employers for their policies and practices that make it easier for employees to serve in the Guard and Reserve.
“It can be challenging to serve a dual role as a medical professional and as a member of the military,” remarked Dr. Vuocolo. “It is a privilege to help our staff successfully enjoy both roles while they are helping our community and nation.”
