12-Year-Old From Emporium Participates In Sinnemahone Paddle

The back stories from events keep organizers smiling!

True Champion of the Sinnemahone Paddle Race!

Today I had the honor of participating in the Sinnemahone 12-Mile Paddle Race from Emporium to Driftwood—an intense challenge made even tougher by hypothermic water and 40-degree temperatures. Every paddler out there today is a phenomenal athlete, but one stood out as a true hero: Ruth Anne, a remarkable 12-year-old from Emporium.

Ruth Anne and I both got caught in a strainer—one of the most dangerous river obstacles. My boat flipped, and I lost my paddle. Amidst the cold, chaos, and danger, Ruth Anne didn’t hesitate. She took the time to help me recover my paddle, a selfless act of bravery and compassion.

What’s even more incredible is that Ruth Anne instinctively followed the core international paddling safety rule: assess the situation, ensure personal safety, then assist others. Her calm, courage, and instinct are beyond her years.

Ruth Anne, thank you. No words can truly express my gratitude. You are the heart and soul of this race
